DownloadA WD NAS-based backup appliance can significantly improve the effectiveness of your backup processes across the board.
While NAKIVO Backup & Replication is already on par with or faster than the competition in terms of backup performance, you can get up to a 1.6X backup speed boost when the product is deployed directly on a Western Digital NAS. This is because the backup data is written directly to NAS disks, bypassing file protocols such as NFS and CIFS. In terms of backup speed, it means that you can back up your machines at up to 1 gigabit per second (with data compression and deduplication turned on), fully utilizing the available NAS bandwidth!
In addition to backing up the environment to NAS, NAKIVO can also send backups to the cloud for further protection. The Backup Copy functionality may come in handy in the event of disaster when your primary infrastructure is rendered unrecoverable along with original backups. By creating extra copies of your critical backups, you can mitigate a single point of failure and thus avoid bringing your work to a grinding halt in the face of unexpected events.
When installed on a WD NAS, NAKIVO Backup & Replication can use all of the available free space on the device to store backups. To save storage space, the backed up data is automatically deduplicated at the block level, ensuring that only unique data is written to the backup repository. Data deduplication works globally across storage spaces, which means that all data from all backup jobs is taken into account. After deduplicating the data, the product automatically compresses each block of data so that it occupies less storage space in the backup repository.
Consider keeping a copy of your backups on the backup appliance for disaster recovery. The 3-2-1 backup best practice suggests that you have 3 copies of data in 2 different media formats, 1 of which is stored offsite. In turn, you can move the backup appliance offsite – even to a place that does not have any virtual or physical server infrastructure – and use it to keep your primary or secondary backups. If disaster strikes, you can restore either over the network or move the backup appliance to the desired location. The backup appliance contains all you need for disaster recovery: hardware to run restores, backup data, and backup software. All of these components are already configured and the appliance is ready to begin the recovery process at any time. Just connect the appliance to the network, and you can instantly recover VMs, application objects, and files of Windows-based and Linux-based machines.
When a backup solution is deployed in a virtual infrastructure, it takes away some of the infrastructure resources (CPU, RAM, network). In contrast, the backup appliance uses its own processing capabilities, thus freeing up resources for other business needs. Additionally, there are fewer machines to manage: instead of deploying and managing one or several VMs dedicated to data protection, you can just use the all-in-one backup appliance. NAKIVO Backup & Replication can be deployed even on entry-level NAS devices which cost under $500, as the product requires just 2 CPU cores and 1 GB of RAM to be fully operational, and still deliver high backup speeds. With NAKIVO Backup & Replication installed on a Western Digital NAS, you can save at least 5X vs. competitors’ backup appliances.
A WD NAS-based backup appliance is very easy to build on your own, with no need to access any technical documentation. Simply download the Western Digital package from our website, access your WD NAS, install the package manually via App Store, and your backup appliance is ready to run the first backup, replication, or recovery job.
